Challenging the New - Eaton Golf Club opens its New Black Course

An unusual Exhibition Match was played on Saturday 26th March at Eaton Golf Club Waverton when Eaton's own 4 young professionals Dale Marmion, James Westwood, Steve Mayer and Nick Foxon took on the Club's newly extended course for the first time.

The new 6714 yard layout, named the Black course, was completed earlier this year. It is 134 yards longer than the Club's previous course and has a Standard Scratch of 73 against a par of 72. Spectators were treated to a feast of high quality golf from the young players. Eventually Dale Marmion won with a score of 70. The match changed hands many times until Dale made a birdie on the 18th and James a bogey. The professionals were unanimous in their enthusiasm for the new layout, commenting 'the extra yards and new bunkering add even more of a challenge to an already stimulating layout in a very fair way'.

The opening celebrations continued into the following day when the Club's own scratch team challenged the Cheshire County squad to experience the new course. Perhaps surprisingly the match was halved. The experience has whetted their appetite for an important inter county match against Durham later in the summer. Alan Wood, Course Committee Chairman, explained 'The impetus for the development of the new Black Course was to create a challenge that would selectively test the single handicapper, not only through increased length but also with new bunkering and more subtle changes to fairway alignments and greens surrounds'. By retaining the original white and yellow (and red!) courses as medal options we have been able to continue to provide enjoyable recreational golf for all our membership, which is after all what a Member's Club needs to do. Eaton now has Black, White, Yellow and Red courses, all with different Standard Scratch ratings.

The course thus offers a full spectrum of playing challenge which can test all of its members, from the Club's increasing number of young Tigers to its popular ladies and mixed golf and the buoyant junior section 'our youngest member is 5!'

Nationally-renowned course architect Martin Ebert, who is regularly involved in modifying the Open layouts, designed the changes. We are particularly proud that our own outstanding greens staff carried out all of the work internally, and that they were able to complete the work a full season ahead of plan. With the new course well and truly commissioned the membership are now eager to test themselves against it.
